An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Secure the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my companion was exploring starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and started talking to people eating there.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I consider applying for a role with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq approached me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a city where anything feels possible – she responded: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his full name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the courage or self-belief to approach someone at an elite institution and ask for a job. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university resulted in a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
